SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES
The Delaware-Union
Educational Service Center school psychologists provide a broad range
of services to Big Walnut, Buckeye Valley, Fairbanks, North Union, and
Olentangy Local schools. The school psychologists coordinate the activities
of the professionals on the Evaluation Team who provide comprehensive
multi-factored evaluations of students who are handicapped or thought
to be handicapped. They also provide each of these students with an intensive
psycho-educational evaluation. When each evaluation is completed, they
participate in the Team's discussion and program planning for the student.
As a result, many youngsters are able to receive special education services.
As a resource person, the school psychologist provides services to students,
their families, and other professionals. In Delaware and Union Counties,
school psychologists participate on Intervention Assistance Teams in most
school buildings, are involved in discussing the concerns of individual
students who are struggling, and assist in developing interventions to
help students experience more success. The school psychologists often
provide individual and group counseling services to students and parents
and in-service training for school personnel and parents. The school psychologists
frequently assist with the screening and orientation of incoming kindergarten
students. School Psychologists in each district are designated to serve
the needs of that district's preschool-aged (3 to 5 years) student population.
Due to on-going changes in special education and as a result of litigation and recent legislation, the school psychologists participate in professional development activities which allow them to remain abreast of special education, legal, and psychological issues which are then implemented in the schools. The county school psychologists are using computer technology to facilitate service delivery to students. Communication and involvement with other community professionals and agencies are important; thus, all are working in the best interests of the students. As a member of the educational team, the school psychologist has unique access to students, their families, and other professionals which helps to "make a difference" in the lives of the children.
