Alternative Education Program Newsletter - April 2008

The GOAL program is an accelerated alternative educational program that provides students with three different options in which to earn a high school diploma or GED by allowing students to:

Recoup credits from a failed semester;
Earn new credits toward a high school diploma; and
Participate in instruction that will prepare them to complete the GED.


To be considered for the GOAL program students must be at least 16 years old or in their second semester of the sophomore year of high school and reading at least at the 6th grade level.

A student enrolled in the GOAL program typically possesses one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Is expecting a child or is already a teen parent.
  • Has family obligations that prevents them from attending school during the day.
  • Has a medical condition that prevents a full-day schedule.
  • Does not function successfully in a traditional school setting.
  • Is emancipated, married, or has to work but is school age.
  • Has dropped out or demonstrates a lack of interest in completing school.
  • Has grades well below projected levels.
  • Is frequently late or has excessive absences.
